““Oh I’m full of things that are considered blasphemy in today’s industry. I don’t like dslr’s. I don’t think digital is a good way for most people to learn photography. I don’t think there is any way to archive digital files, at least I’ve never found a single person who actually knows how or has any real plan for the future. I think a lot of photographers, after switching to digital, are not nearly as good as they were during their analog days. I think digital has killed the editing abilities of most photographers. I don’t think seeing an image right after you make it is a good thing. I don’t think having the ability to overshoot every scene actually helps make better images. I think digital has trivialized the idea of photography in the minds of everyday people. I think our industry is now almost entirely centered around technology as opposed to imagery. I’ve never seen an HDR image I like, and the fact I’m starting to see this technique creep into nearly every genre of photography makes me sick.
How is that for starters? I don’t get invited to many parties these days. At the core, digital is a great thing. What we do with it, how we use it…that is another matter.””

Some people hate New Year’s Resolutions, and end-of-year lists, but I am not one of them. Since losing the cyclical nature of the school year, I’ve let the calendar become by yardstick of time. I relish the opportunity to leave old things behind with passing of a year and use the new freedom to pick up newer, better things.

One of my resolutions for 2012 was to read more. 20+ books later, I feel I’ve more than succeed.

In addition to books, I’ve been much better at chewing through my Instapaper queue, thus reading more long-form articles online. There’s probably too many to list, but I wanted to share a few of my favorites:

Best Tech Reporting: How Yahoo Killed Flickr and Lost the Internet
Mat Honan deserves incredible praise for this.

Best Tech Writing: Paris and the Data Mind
By far the most beautiful and interesting take on “the quantified self” I’ve read.

Best Non-Tech Writing: A Short Lesson In Perspective
Sage advice, worth taking to heart.
Runner-up: The Busy Trap

Best Relationship Advice: Heaven Can Wait

Best Short Story: Samhey’s The Handicapped Stall Door Swings Out, of course.

Find a PS3 and play this game. You can come over and use mine, if you want. It only takes a few hours to do the entire thing, and it’s completely worth the investment. It is beautiful, inspiring, eye-opening, and surprising.

Best Underrated Movie: Safety Not Guaranteed
Sweet, funny, weird, awesome.

Best Portrait: This stunning photo of an utterly depressed and exhausted Psy, taken by none other than John Mayer.

Best Video of Jack Dorsey Walking Into a Building Seven Times in a Row: This one, for sure.
